WARHELIING

I'm R/C heli fun, so I thought about sniffing wireless networks with my
heli(s). This document describes how you can build your own toy.
How to build warheliing thingy with Linksys WRT54G + DragonFly + Wireless camera? Let's see...
| Get some R/C heli (I bought DragonFly #36 brushless), learn
how to fly that thing (this is not easy part!), Note: It's normal that
you crash your helicopter few times :)
 |
| Get Linksys WRT54G *without* builtin switch :), it's
great Linux based device, there's lot of modified firmwares which you
can use, Learn how to put kismet on this beautiful device, and then remove plastic box and wrap Linksys in a paper (plastic box is too big and heavy)
 |
| Mount Linksys-in-paper on helicopter, I used plain old tape
to do that :) Connect Linksys to the battery (buy some connectors in
your favourite electronic shop!)
 |
| Now, everything is ready, so you can mount wireless camera to your heli, I used tape for that purpose too :)
 |
And now you have wonderful toy to play with! :)
Some advantages and disadvantages:
| Advantage |
Disadvantage |
| Small, can fly over the fence |
Flying is limited to maximum 20 minutes with 2200 mAH battery |
| Remote visual/video |
Hard to fly |
| Good espionage thingy? :) |
It's hard to crack wireless encryptions with only 20 minutes available |
| There's no obstacles in the air (better wireless signals and it's easier to manuever) |
It's hard to extend battery life (batteries are heavy!) |
| It's hard to catch mastermind :) |
If you crash it, probably you'll spend around $50 to fix it :) |
| There's no need for runways (comparing to R/C planes) |
Range is 200-300 meters (for wireless camera even less!) |
| Lot of fun :) |
If there's some wind - no flying |
Some advices:
- Try to find Linksys without built-in switch (LAN ports) :)
- You can practice how to fly with free FMS (only for Windows, sorry, but you can use Wine)
- Hardest part is to balance Linksys (with paper box) on helicopter (you'll spend some time adjusting the position of Linksys)
